  • It’s like my grandmother always said, “Recognition is nice, but cold, hard cash is even better. Get yours.” Nana rolled hard. I guess Film Streams (filmstreams.org) doesn’t have to worry much about that advice, as they were not only recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, that acknowledgement came in the form of a $20,000 grant to help support the theater’s repertory series. And speaking of those repertory series, the first one for 2012 will be World Cinema Revivals: A Celebration of Film Preservation, which will run Feb 12 to April 5. Sporting brilliant works like The Leopard, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Weekend to name a few, this series embraces the preservation and restoration of movies, which makes Martin Scorsese happy. And like Nana always said, “You do whatever Marty tells you to do, capice?”
  • If you’re looking to get your anime on (and really, who isn’t?), get thee to Aksarben Cinema (aksarbencinema.com) the week of Jan 20-26, as the locally owned multiplex will be screening Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos. I admit I know next to nothing about this series, but having watched my fair share of Japanese animation over the last few years, I can only assume it will involve a hero with spiky hair and saucer-sized eyes who screams a lot. Honestly, it’s hard to see anime on the big screen these days, so seize your opportunity now!
  • Tim Burton is going to direct a live-action version of Pinocchio in the near future and has said publicly that he’d like Robert Downey Jr. to play Geppetto, which is weird. I had no idea Johnny Depp had changed his name to Robert Downey Jr.
