Allen Stone is a young dude from Washington who has delved into a R&B-inflected rock sound that thrives on the sound of vintage soul. After releasing his self-titled second album by himself, Stone signed on with ATO Records and re-released the album earlier this year. Stevie Wonder holds a heavy influence on a few of the tracks. Stone even cites the purchase of Wonder’s Innervisions when he was a teenager as a game-changer. Keyboard lines and light horns feature prominently on several songs, especially the ones that incorporate light funk-pop synth squiggles. It’s that lean towards a pop-centered sound that could put Stone ahead of rock-based contemporaries like Black Joe Lewis.
