Omaha Playwright Daena Schweiger opens doors and sheds light on the lives of people blocked from coming out in eight monologues of remembrances,Voices from the Closet. She reaches across boundaries, borders and time. Among her subjects are Great Britain’s last known execution for homosexuality, a Russian criminal code of exile for homosexual acts, female escort services and cyber bullying. Four directors evoke the collective experience. Schweiger was awarded an IAF Grant in playwriting from the Nebraska Arts Council. And she garnered a Theatre Arts Guild Award for Outstanding New Script, with Love is Strange which emerged in 2002 at Shelterbelt Theatre. She’s had an enduring connection with that company, being former Artistic Director, creating one-acts, and directing, most recently Joe Basque’s The Battle of Battles. As often at SNAP, you can be so close to those people on stage you may want to hold on to them.
