Colorful, diverse characters try to form more perfect unions conceived in liberty. {Maybe they come up with “I do.” Maybe they don’t.} The collection of playwrights probing such relationships could be a band of gold. Among those in this ring of monologues and short plays are Neil LaBute, Doug Wright (he of I’m My Own Wife), frequently hilarious Paul Rudnick and Moisés Kaufman whose emotional thought-provoker 33 Variations shone at Blue Barn seven months ago. Multi-major- credited director Brian Schnipper came up with the concept of gathering such a remarkable array of talent, feeling that stories like these need to be told. The 2011 premiere was hailed in the Los Angeles Times as a “vital achievement.” Productions have unfolded across 25 states, speaking to and about those among us still outside the conventional mainstream.
