The Nebraska Arts Council will host an opening reception for Great Lakes to Great Plains, artwork by Linda Stephen and Iggy Sumnik on Friday, January 9, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fred Simon Gallery. The event is free and open to the public.
Both Nebraska-based artists, Stephen and Sumnik are natives of Michigan. The exhibition will feature origami collages created by Stephen during her 2014 artist-in-residence with the National Parks Service at the Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice, Nebraska.
Her series “House and Home” honors the history of homesteading and celebrates the restored tall grass prairie at Homestead. Sumnik’s ceramic sculptures merge the natural world and cultural trends to create bright, interesting and contrasting scenarios. His work on display spans the past five years, including new and previously exhibited selections.
Great Lakes to Great Plains will be on display through Friday, February 6. The Fred Simon Gallery is located in the Nebraska Arts Council offices on the lower level of the historic Burlington Place Building at 1004 Farnam Street in Omaha. Gallery hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding state holidays.
