May the Fourth (and today’s news) be with you: Omaha’s mask mandate is set to expire as the U.K. variant spreads among young people, UNO staff and students will return to campus this fall, and construction jobs are going unfilled due to a skilled-labor shortage.
Around Omaha
- The “Next Level Learning” program has more than 17,000 students enrolled for summer school in Omaha public schools. Metro-area school districts are looking to close pandemic learning gaps.
- Mayor Jean Stothert and Douglas County Health Director Dr. Adi Pour provide Covid-19 updates. Stothert says she will let Omaha’s mask mandate expire if cases don’t increase, and Pour says a more contagious variant from the U.K. is spreading among young adults.
- The University of Nebraska at Omaha staff and students will return to campus this fall. This decision was made based on the decreasing cases of Covid-19 in the community.
- The Salvation Army is hosting a drive-thru food pantry at the Burrows Center on Wednesday. About 200 boxes of food will be handed out.
- The Metropolitan Entertainment & Convention Authority is hosting a job fair today to hire ushers, crowd managers and security officers ahead of next month’s College World Series.

- After nine house fires in one weekend in Nebraska, the Red Cross is offering education and advice for house-fire prevention and forming an escape plan.
- A skilled-labor shortage is making it difficult for Nebraska’s construction industry to fill positions with qualified workers.
- Following the national trend, Lincoln-area hospitals are seeing more young patients hospitalized with Covid-19. There is concern that younger people are less likely to get vaccinated, causing the increase in hospitalizations.

The Last Day
The love you show your community is important. That becomes more apparent as you prepare to move on.
By the time you have reached the last day, your head may be swimming from everything you must remember – or at least that’s how you may feel. Fortunately, the more you have accomplished during these last eight weeks, the less you’ve got to worry about today.
So, the last day should consist of the few last-minute tasks you need to complete, such as packing your suitcases and the last half of your essential items. Pack anything else you might need for the move as well, such as trash bags or gloves. These could be useful on the road and when unloading.
Lastly, if you have not informed your neighbors you are moving and they are about to have new neighbors, you should do so now. That will give them time to make room for parking if necessary and let them know they may be seeing unfamiliar faces in the neighborhood.
