Omaha Public Power District will offer a glimpse into its future energy plans at an integrated system plan workshop this month.
OPPD is continuing its comprehensive planning process designed to ensure the utility is prepared to support future growth while maintaining reliable, affordable and environmentally sensitive electric service.
A press release stated the plan will serve as a strategic roadmap for long-term energy decisions. Updated every five years, the planning process helps OPPD evaluate future system needs and potential investments as customer demand and the energy landscape continue to evolve.
Members of the public are invited to learn about the planning effort, review potential pathways and provide feedback. The planning workshop will be held online Tuesday, Sept. 22 at p.m. to provide an update on the planning process and review initial results.
Pre-registration is encouraged so participants can receive reminders and calendar invitations. Registration can be done online.
Workshops are recorded and posted online along with meeting summaries for those unable to attend live or who would like to review previous discussions.
This year’s planning process takes a broader approach than previous efforts. In addition to evaluating future generation resources, OPPD is considering transmission and distribution needs, potential grid modernization, customer solutions, and both supply- and demand-side technologies.
The process will develop and compare potential energy portfolios across a range of future scenarios and help guide OPPD’s planned transition of North Omaha Station.
OPPD is partnering with Energy+Environmental Economics, a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in energy system analysis, to support the planning process.
The plan also fulfills a regulatory requirement with the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) as part of OPPD’s long-term agreement to receive hydroelectric power. OPPD will submit its final plan to WAPA by the end of 2026.
