Omaha has been chosen as a host city for a major international volleyball tournament.
The FIVB on Thursday announced that Omaha is one of three American cities that will host matches for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup, which is considered one of the top women’s volleyball events in the world.
The tournament will run from Aug. 20 to Sept. 5, 2027, and Omaha along with Orlando, Florida, will host pool play matches and the round of 16. Canadian cities will also host early round games, but those host cities have not yet been announced. The tournament will then move to Anaheim, California, which will host the quarterfinal, semifinal and final matches.
FIVB said in a news release that “host cities and venues were selected based on passionate fan bases, world-class venues with seating capacities worthy of a World Cup, strong government and local partner support to ensure exceptional experiences, and markets that can attract new fans and accelerate volleyball’s growth across.”
Omaha is the home of two professional women’s volleyball teams and has hosted several NCAA volleyball Final Fours.
“Omaha’s selection to host the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup is an exciting recognition of this city’s passion for volleyball and its place as a premier destination in the world for the sport,” said Omaha Supernovas co-owner Kirk Thompson. “We can’t wait to welcome the world’s best players to CHI Health Center.”
Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen called the announcement “exciting news.”
“There’s no other state in the nation that supports volleyball the way Nebraskans do,” Pillen said in a statement. “It’s no surprise that we will be one of the host locations, given that we have the most incredible fans in America.”
