Nebraska gets a D+ on public schools report card

Nebraska’s public schools aren’t making the grade, according to the latest annual review of the nation’s public schools from Education Week . The Quality Counts 2011 report gave Nebraska an overall grade of D+, joining South Dakota and the District of Columbia as states who received the lowest grades. Nebraska’s overall score of 68.6 was the lowest in the country. Nationwide, public schools received a C grade (76.3). The report ranks schools on chances for success, K-12 achievement, school finance, standards and assessment, transitions and alignment, and the teaching profession. Nebraska received a B- grade in chances for success, but an F in transitions and alignment, including a failing grade in college readiness. This marks the second-straight year Nebraska has received a D+ grade. The state received a C- in 2009.
