If you’re lucky, on Wednesday Feb 25 and Thursday Feb 26, you’ll be lonely! Sorry, that should be “you’ll be at Lonely Boy,” an indie film screening at Aksarben Cinema at 7 pm both nights, with a Q&A following the film. Lonely Boy follows three days in the life of Franky, a dude dealing with all manner of personal problems from family to love life. Back in the day when I started this film gig, we couldn’t even get certain Hollywood movies to screen in Omaha. Now, creators are doing Q&A sessions for indie films in the Big O. Give yourself a big high-five, Omaha. You’ve earned it.
Finally, after all these years, I am going to get super powers. On Tuesday, March 3 at 7 pm, Film Streams is screening Becoming Bulletproof at the Ruth Sokolof Theater. It is a free screening you shouldn’t miss because, clearly, it is a documentary filled with instructions on how to become like Superman and have bullets bounce off of you. Wait, reading now, I see it’s actually a documentary about a group of adults with disabilities from across America who gather to make a movie called Bulletproof. Oh. That’s cool too, I guess. The theater is holding a Q&A after the screening with the director, and that’s co-sponsored by the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities. I suppose I’ll just have to ask them how I turn into Superman during the Q&A period.
On Monday March 9 at 7 pm, Film Streams and Spielound, Omaha’s nonprofit board game café, will host a screening of World Peace and Other 4th-Grade Achievements. I have to admit, as a 4th grader, my achievements were mostly “didn’t totally embarrass myself in front of Kristi Johnson today.” But apparently the film is a documentary about a teacher who created an exercise called the “World Peace Game” that is designed to inspire young people. “Cool, a game we get to play,” said young people, “Is it like ‘Grand Theft Auto?’”
