The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Department will use a $10,000 grant to add patrols in and around Whiteclay, Neb. in hopes of reversing the town’s troubled reputation as the primary source of alcohol on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The money is part of $25,000 set aside by the state legislature earlier this year for Whiteclay. Located just 200 feet from the South Dakota border, Whiteclay sells more than 4 million cans of beer each year, most of it crossing the border into South Dakota and the Pine Ridge Reservation where alcohol is prohibited. State officials say they may wait until next year to award the remaining $15,000.
