Today we have stories about the director of Douglas County Department of Corrections saying his staff did its best with an influx of protesters arrested Saturday night, a UNMC report showing transmission levels are too high for anyone to return to school and the Unicameral digging into tax cuts and property tax reliefs, but passing on an eviction moratorium.

In Omaha
- The Douglas County Board of Health announced its unanimous support for a mask mandate that will likely take effect on Aug. 3.
- Douglas County Corrections Director Michael Myers said he’s proud of the way his staff handled an influx of arrested protesters, despite stories of mistreatment and unsanitary conditions at the jail. Jail staff say they’re looking at ways to improve.
- At one jail housing unit, 36 of 41 inmates tested positive for COVID-19 last week, the Douglas County Department of Corrections announced Monday.

- A state senator says he has the votes to stop tax cuts that would provide relief to businesses affected by COVID-19. Those funds could be put to better use for property tax relief, he said.
- A majority of state senators refused to hear an amendment that would have provided a moratorium on evictions.
- State sen. Julie Slama, of Peru, had to isolate in the legislative chamber’s balcony after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.
