Celebrate with chips and guac, a margarita and today’s news: The Douglas County Health Department plans to move away from mass-vaccination clinics, Omaha restaurants are facing a supply shortage and rising costs, and Nebraska lawmakers reject a bill that would give more money to rural schools.
Around Omaha
- As the FDA prepares to approve the Pfizer vaccine for ages 12-15, the Douglas County Health Department plans to move away from mass-vaccination clinics and prepares pediatric clinics to administer the vaccine.
- Mayor Jean Stothert approves a plan to develop the Civic Auditorium site at 17th and Capitol streets. The development will include multi-family housing, retail, office, parking and public space.
- Omaha restaurants are facing a supply shortage and rising prices for food products, forcing them to absorb the costs and adjust their menus.
- The nonprofit Cinco de Mayo Omaha is hosting the Latin Expo online, changing the holiday celebration out of precaution for Covid-19.
- The City of Omaha says the “broom dump,” a large pile of dirt and garbage from street sweepers at 18th and Fort streets, is not toxic, but neighbors in the area want it removed.
- Habitat for Humanity will build 88 affordable, single-family homes at the site of the former Wintergreen Apartments, near 51st and Sorensen streets. The site has been empty 14 years.
- A stretch of 44th street, near Nebraska Medicine’s emergency room, will be closed for construction until May 7. The emergency room will remain open, and signs on campus will direct traffic to an alternative entrance during construction.

- The Saunders County Planning Board votes 4-2 to turn down a proposed 500-acre solar farm.
- Children ages 12-15 will soon be eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine. Some parents in Nebraska believe the vaccine should be mandatory in schools, while others are hesitant to vaccinate their kids.
- Nebraska lawmakers are two votes short of advancing a bill that attempts to steer more money to small, rural K-12 schools, many of which receive little aid from the state.

The Big Day
The big day is upon you. You can congratulate yourself, but you must nevertheless be prepared to put in some hard work.
What better way to do so than to pack plenty of water bottles for you and your group. Moving is, after all, a strenuous process, and depending on where you live and when you are moving, if it’s not a beautiful day during patio season, the weather could be brutal and dangerous.
Additionally, it is essential to practice caution when moving. There are your personal set of keys and the keys you will be returning – perhaps truck rentals to watch over. By taking an extra moment throughout your moving day, you can save yourself the trouble of backtracking and loss.
Lastly, you may want to take pictures of your cleaned and empty home for insurance purposes – and possibly even a home photo shoot, just because. That way, you have proof of the condition it was left in, in case rental disagreements occur after the move.
